British Columbia – Nelson – Truck Escape Ramp

In by john.dreznes

This location features a CatchNet truck escape ramp installed to address the risk of runaway heavy vehicles on a steep downhill approach in a constrained mountain corridor. Limited available right-of-way and terrain conditions made a traditional gravel escape ramp impractical at this site.

The CatchNet system provides a compact, energy-absorbing vehicle arresting solution, capable of safely decelerating and stopping an out-of-control truck within a significantly shorter distance than conventional ramp designs. The net structure captures the vehicle in a controlled manner, minimizing the risk of rollover, secondary impacts, or encroachment into adjacent lanes.

This installation enhances safety for commercial traffic and the traveling public while fitting within the existing roadway footprint and environmental constraints. The system remains passive during normal operations and requires no driver action beyond entering the escape path in an emergency.
