Texas – I-10 Near El Paso – Truck Escape Ramp

In by john.dreznes

A new CatchNet median truck escape ramp is under construction along Interstate 10 just east of El Paso, Texas. Due to limited available right-of-way on the shoulder and adjacent property constraints, the design positions the ramp in the median where adequate space and appropriate sight distance exist. The Texas Department of Transportation determined this location was the best feasible alternative given there was no room for a traditional ramp on either outer shoulder, and the department already owns the land required in the median.

This installation will provide a dedicated, engineered runoff area for out-of-control heavy vehicles to safely decelerate, helping reduce the risk and severity of potential downhill runaway incidents. The CatchNet energy-absorbing capture system is designed to gently decelerate and stop vehicles without secondary rebound or rollover, offering a modern and compact solution where conventional long, gravel-based escape ramps cannot be accommodated.

Once completed, this new ramp will improve safety for truck traffic in this corridor and provide peace of mind for all travelers on this high-speed interstate route.
